Interested in Level 4 Diploma?

The WSET Diploma is a top qualification in the wine and spirits industry and is a pre-requisite to the Master of Wine. The Diploma is an in depth study of business, winemaking and consumption trends of most of the world's wine and spirit production regions.

Diploma is broken into 6 "Units" which are taught in the Bay Area over two years.

Units 1 and 2, "The Global Business of Wine" and "Viticulture and Winemaking," are offered as a traditional course every year over 3 weekend days in late October/early November.

Online Units 1 and 2 are also offered in the fall and winter. Online requires in person participation in an Induction course day that goes over Diploma basics and tasting technique.

Units 1 and 2 are sold together.. The fee registers you for three years with the WSET and gives access to the proprietary Global Campus. You also need to read "Understanding Wine Technology," by David Bird and "Viticulture - - An Introduction to Commercial Grape Growing for Wine Production," by Stephen Skelton. Both are paperbacks and available through the web (www.amazon.com and www.lulu.com respectively).

The WSET mandates that students sit the 90-minute, 100-question Unit 2 multiple-choice exam before they may take any other exam or write the Unit 1 paper. This is the only exam that has flexibility to be tailored to a student or Center's schedule. Other exams are offered on specific dates around the world.

Below are the Units for the Diploma, with Course dates and prices for both Course and Online (prices subject to change in August 2013). A student may choose to do some units online and others class. Students only pay for the Unit(s) they are planning to take in advance of receiving books and registration. That way costs can be stretched out over 2 years or more.

  • Unit 1 & Unit 2 The Business of Wine & Spirits & Viticulture & Winemaking: Begins January 4, 2014: $1,775, with in person Introduction day Feb 8, 2014
